The nationwide networking meeting of Welcome Centers took place in Magdeburg on May 7th and 8th – and Görlitz was there. Representatives from politics and business, as well as 91 Welcome Centers from all over Germany, used the two intensive days to exchange ideas and gain new inspiration. The central question repeatedly addressed was: How can we best support people when they arrive and settle in Germany?
The first day offered engaging presentations and new perspectives. Among others, Patrick Paquet, Head of Unit at the European Commission, Professor Dr. Lothar Abicht, a futurologist, and Minister Petra Grimm-Benne spoke about their respective fields. During the subsequent gallery walk , participants gained insights into the work of the other Welcome Centers. The exchange about local opportunities and challenges proved particularly enriching. The day concluded with a panel discussion and a joint city tour of Magdeburg.
The second day was dedicated to active exchange in practical workshops. Topics included digitalization, sustainable immigration, language training, and success factors for retaining students and trainees in the region. It was particularly interesting to see how each region creatively utilizes its own framework, what opportunities arise from this, and how committed all participants are to working towards a common goal: establishing a successful culture of welcome and retention in the region.
A heartfelt thank you to all the organizers – we are already looking forward to the next meeting in Munich!
